In the wake of an alleged gang-rape incident involving a law student in Kolkata’s Kasba area, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dispatched a four-member fact-finding team to the city. The delegation was constituted under the instruction of BJP National President J.P. Nadda to gather details about the incident and assess the law and order situation.
The team comprises Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, MP, former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, , former Union Minister Satyapal Singh, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra. Upon arrival at Kolkata Airport on Monday afternoon, the team was received by BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul.
According to Paul, the delegation had planned to meet the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Chief Secretary, followed by a visit to the South Kolkata Law College, where the alleged incident reportedly occurred. A press briefing was also scheduled for the evening.
Speaking to reporters, Biplab Kumar Deb criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, alleging attempts to obstruct the investigation effort. “Women are not safe in Bengal not even law students,” Deb remarked, adding that it was undemocratic to prevent opposition representatives from conducting fact-finding visits.
