On Wednesday, the death toll from the electrocution incident that occurred in June during the return Rath Yatra in Tripura’s Unakoti district increased to nine.
A 32-year-old woman named Droupadi Nama, who was injured in the accident, passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in Guwahati, Assam, according to a senior police officer.
Previously, eight individuals, including two children, lost their lives when the chariot of Lord Jagannath came into contact with a high-tension wire during the return Rath Yatra festival on June 28 in the Kumarghat area.
An additional 16 people were also injured due to electrocution.
The Assistant Inspector General, Law and Order, Jyotisman Das said, “The woman who was injured and undergoing treatment in Guwahati passed away on July 23. Her body was brought back here yesterday.”
Earlier, Nama’s son, aged five-and-a-half, had also lost his life in the same accident.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the accident site, met with the family members of the deceased as well as directed a probe to be conducted by the district magistrate.
However, the findings of the investigation have not been made public yet.
