Kolkata, June 2: In an inspiring story of perseverance and social mobility, first-time MLA Kalita Majhi has been inducted into the West Bengal Council of Ministers, marking a remarkable journey from working as a domestic helper to holding a key position in the state government.
Majhi, who represents the Ausgram Assembly constituency in Purba Bardhaman district, took the oath of office at a ceremony held in Kolkata on Tuesday. Her appointment to the state cabinet has drawn attention as a powerful example of grassroots leadership and democratic empowerment.
Born into a financially struggling family, Majhi spent a significant part of her life working as a housemaid to support her household. Despite the hardships, she remained actively engaged in social and political activities at the local level, gradually building her presence as a community leader.
Her electoral victory in the recent Assembly elections paved the way for her elevation to the state ministry, underscoring her growing influence in public life.
Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Majhi thanked the party leadership for placing their trust in her. She said her focus would be on strengthening rural development, promoting women’s empowerment, expanding social welfare initiatives, and improving basic infrastructure across the state.
