The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come under criticism from opposition leaders after its decision to contest all 28 seats of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council independently, ending seat-sharing arrangements with Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and TIPRA Motha.
Following the declaration of results, Asish Kumar Saha and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury alleged that the ruling party’s strategy proved costly, as the BJP secured only four seats in the council.
Speaking to the media, Chaudhury held Chief Minister Manik Saha directly responsible for the outcome. He claimed that the chief minister had spent the last five years shielding TIPRA Motha from accountability regarding governance in the hill areas and overlooking alleged irregularities in the ADC administration.
