Supreme Court orders regularisation of 8 DRW staff

Agartala, March 7: The state government has received another major setback from the Supreme Court regarding the issue of irregular employees. The country’s highest court has directed the state government to regularize irregular workers within three months, along with payment of 30 percent of their pending arrears.

The verdict is expected to directly benefit around 40,000 irregular employees across Tripura who have been facing uncertainty over their jobs for a long time.

Reacting to the development on Friday, senior advocate Purushottamray Burman said that the Supreme Court’s directive is extremely significant for the irregular workers of the state. He expressed hope that the judgment would help end the long-standing uncertainty faced by thousands of employees.

Elaborating on the background of the case, Roy Barman said, “Eight DRW staff of the education department posted in schools located at Kanchanpur and Ganganagar moved the High Court of Tripura in 2021 with a plea for regularisation. The high court single bench rejected the petition stating that the scheme through which employees engaged in non-regular posts were regularised had been abolished by the state government. Later, the division bench of the High Court also upheld the judgement of the single bench in 2022. The petitioners moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s verdict and eventually the apex court ruled in their favour.”
