Tripura on high alert: IMD warns of heavy rainfall

Due to a climatic depression moving north-northeastwards, Tripura has experienced rainfall since Friday night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall across various northeastern states for four days starting Sunday, following a cyclonic storm caused by a depression over the central Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, along with Tripura, other northeastern states such as Manipur, Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas from May 26 to 28.

The IMD stated, “extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya on May 27 and 28, followed by Tripura and Mizoram on May 27, and Arunachal Pradesh on May 28.”
The IMD predicts that the depression will continue moving northeastwards and develop into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal.

This storm is likely to cross the Bangladesh and adjacent West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara around midnight on Sunday, with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting up to 130 kmph.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for Tripura on Saturday, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph across all districts. Gusty thunderstorms have already occurred in Agartala, Amtali, and parts of West Tripura district.

The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) reported rainfall and gusty winds from various parts of Tripura.

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Tripura on Sunday, predicting thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in South, Gomati, Dhalai, Sepahijala, and West districts. A yellow alert has been issued for the rest of the districts.

On May 27 and 28, an orange alert indicates thunderstorms with lightning, squally winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in South, Dhalai, West, Sepahijala and Gomati districts. On May 28, thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall are expected in isolated places of Dhalai, North, and Unakoti districts.
