Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian gymnast to win gold in Asian Senior Championships

Dipa Karmakar made history by winning India’s first gold medal at the Asian Championships on Sunday.

Karmakar, who previously won bronze in the individual vault final in 2015, finished first among the eight participants in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on the final day of the latest edition.

The 30-year-old female athlete scored an average of 13.566 in the final, with both of her vaults receiving identical scores of 13.566. North Korea’s Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

On Friday, the Indian gymnast finished 16th in the all-around category with a score of 46.166, failing to secure an Olympic quota for Paris 2024.

Notably, Karmakar had finished fourth in the vault final at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Now, Dipa Karmakar’s historic first place finish at vault individual final in Tashkent 2024 has secured the first gold for India.
