Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka on Monday handed death sentences to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, ruling them guilty in a case linked to alleged crimes against humanity committed during last year’s student agitation.
The tribunal, comprising three judges and headed by Justice Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, delivered its verdict after months of proceedings. In the same judgment, former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun — who testified for the state — received a five-year prison term.
Hasina, 78, who has been living abroad and was not present during the trial, rejected the ruling through a statement issued shortly after the judgment.
She termed the decision “politically coloured” and accused the interim administration of engineering the outcome. Her son, Sajeed Wazed, also strongly criticised the tribunal’s action while speaking to reporters.
