Due to the continuous heavy rains in Ward No. 7 and Ward No. 8 of Melaghar Municipality under Sipahijala, the water level of the Gomati River has increased in the area along the riverbanks.
As a result, many homes have been damaged. Several houses have already been submerged in the riverbed and several more family members have been evacuated to safer places due to the fear of erosion.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, District Magistrate of Sipahijala district C. Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal visited the affected areas today. He visited the erosion-affected areas of Ward No. 7 and 8 of Melaghar Municipality and spoke to the affected families and inquired about their current condition and problems.
The concerned officials of the district administration were also present during the inspection. The District Magistrate assured to stand by the affected people and ordered the administration to take necessary measures to deal with the situation. He also said that the administration is also active in preventing erosion and providing necessary assistance to the affected families.
Meanwhile, the residents of the riverbank areas are terrified by the continuous erosion of the Gomati River. They demand that effective measures be taken to prevent river erosion immediately and permanently, so that no other family has to lose everything like this in the future
District Magistrate & Collector visited the ongoing anti-erosion work and Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) Scheme along with the Executive Engineer under RIDF-XXIX at Barnarayan, Kathalia RD Block. The project, involving the protection of the left bank of the Gomati River through the construction of a launching apron and CC block slope pitching over 150 metres, is a vital intervention to safeguard lives, agricultural land, and public infrastructure from riverbank erosion.
Such sustainable infrastructure initiatives not only strengthen climate resilience but also reaffirm our commitment to protecting communities and ensuring long-term water security for the District.
