World Statistics Day was observed at Government Degree College Kamalpur on 14th October 2025. Every five years, on October 20th, nations worldwide observe World Statistics Day to draw attention to the significance of official statistics and data for both national and international development.
It was first observed in 2010, following a suggestion by the United Nations Statistical Commission, and honours the role that statistics play in daily living, decision-making, and sustainable development. This year, the theme is “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone”. To observe this Day, a Seminar was organised by the Departments of Economics & Mathematics and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell.
The discussion was initiated by Dr. Bimal Chandra Das, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Mathematics. He explained how statistics is playing a pivotal role in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The tools for data analysis, model construction, and performance evaluation are provided by statistics, which form the basis of artificial intelligence and machine learning. By measuring uncertainty and drawing generalizations from data, they allow AI systems to derive insights, spot trends, and provide forecasts.
The main speaker was Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Principal of the college, who was earlier an Associate Professor of Economics. He initiated his lecture with basic concepts of Statistics & statistical tools.
In everyday life, statistics are crucial for analyzing trends, making predictions, and making well-informed decisions in a variety of domains, including governance, healthcare, economics, and weather forecasting. By offering a framework for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to steer actions and enhance results in both personal as well as professional lives, they assist in making better decisions. For National budgets, governments estimate revenue and expenditure using statistical methodologies.
In order to inform decisions about pay scales and the cost of living, statistical techniques are employed to calculate things like inflation rates. Governments use statistics to inform choices on health, education, and other issues that impact millions of people. He also analysed the importance of data and how data are available.
Dr. Swapan Sharma, Secretary, Teachers’ Council, Dr. Aparna De, Coordinator, IQAC and all faculty members were present in the seminar. The Seminar was also attended by a good number of students.
