Boxnagar, February 10: Tension gripped the North Kalamchoora area of Boxnagar on Monday following an anti-marijuana drive conducted in the locality. The situation escalated after allegations surfaced that some Assam Rifles personnel assaulted traders and local residents during the operation.

According to local sources, the personnel reportedly failed to destroy the seized marijuana and subsequently engaged in a confrontation with people present in the market. Residents alleged that four youths were detained, beaten up, and later abandoned on the roadside.

In protest against the alleged assault, an angry crowd staged a road blockade on the Boxnagar–Sonamura road. The demonstration continued for nearly three hours, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt. Several passenger buses and goods-laden vehicles were left stranded due to the disruption.

As the situation intensified, the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Police Officer reached the spot around 5:30 pm and assured the protesters of a proper investigation into the matter. Following the assurance, the blockade was withdrawn.
