Agartala: The state Congress on Tuesday launched protest and demonstration programmes across Tripura against the Central government’s decision to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and replace it with a new law titled the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission Bill, 2025.
As part of the statewide agitation, a protest programme was held in front of the Agartala Congress Bhavan. Addressing the gathering, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that the new legislation is anti-worker in nature and has been designed to cleverly curtail the rights of labourers and rural job seekers.
He termed the repeal of MGNREGA “disastrous” and said the Congress would continue its movement against the law.
Following the protest meeting, Congress workers burned an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of the state Congress Bhavan as a mark of opposition to the new Act.
