Tripura assembly passes bill for private open university amid walkout by CPM, Cong MLAs

Opposition Congress and CPI-M MLAs walked out of the Tripura assembly after Chief Minister Manik Saha rejected their request to send a Bill proposing the formation of a private university to a select committee for scrutiny.

The opposition leader, Tipra Motha’s Animesh Debbarma emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the Bill by a selected committee.

CPI-M’s Jitendra Choudhury shared concerns about allowing the Delhi-based private organization, Himalayan Universal Educational Trust, to establish an open university in a state that already has three private universities and advocated for sending the select committee for proper scrutiny.”

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman also expressed his concerns and urged the chief minister to send the Bill to the select experts or a committee for scrutiny.

Responding to the opposition’s concerns, the chief minister Manik Saha highlighted the Himalayan Universal Educational Trust’s experience in managing universities across Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The chief minister assured that the organization, adhering to UGC guidelines would establish the open university in the acquired 5.40-acre plot in Udaipur, Gomati district, which is expected to aid students who faced challenges completing college.

Despite the objections from CPI(M) and Congress MLAs, the Bill for the establishment of Mata Tripura Sundari Open University was eventually passed in the House.
